Intercambio de Idiomas is a community outreach literacy class offered by the CUNY Endangered Language Initiative in conjunction with the East Harlem Neighborhood Network and Little Sisters of the Assumption. The students in this weekly class are indigenous Mexican and Guatemalan mothers who immigrated to the US and now live in East Harlem. The main goals of the class are three-fold: to aid in the development of literacy skills; promote the use of minority languages; and teach conversational English.
Most recently, our students are working on writing and illustrating their own trilingual books. We’ll be having a showcase and reading this spring where students will present their books to their families and the community.
A short article about the class here.
