Intercambio de Idiomas
Intercambio de Idiomas is a community outreach literacy class made possible by the CUNY Endangered Language Initiative, the Endangered Language Alliance, and LSA Family Health Service. The students in this weekly class are indigenous Mexican and Guatemalan mothers who immigrated to the US and now live in East Harlem. The main goals of the class are three-fold: to aid in the development of literacy skills, promote the use of minority languages, and teach conversational English.
Most recently, our students are working on writing and illustrating their own trilingual books. Once the books ship from the publisher, we’ll be hosting a showcase and reading where students will present their books to their families and the community.
LSA posted a short article about the class here.
